The King Size Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt ~ DNP

Alas, as promised, here are the rest of the photos of the finished "Americana~Not so 4th of Julyish~Hopefully Looks Texan" ~ Disappearing Nine Patch quilt top.  I sent it to my most wonderful, life-long friend and her husband, the lucky recipients. She immediately passed it on to the long armer, who will complete the project.  I hope they will take and share photos.  I'm anxious to see the quilters beautiful work.

I'm disappointed because I wanted to complete the quilt myself, and hopefully I can add a label next time I see her.  Lisa does hair.  She worked out a trade with the quilter as she is anxious to sleep under the quilt while winter is still chilling us.  Works for me.  I can't afford to get a King quilted right now anyway.

I love using scale and stripes in every scrap quilt.  So many people shy away from stripes.  I insist they be added.  I won't make a quilt without them.  I love the movement they add.  I also like the way stripes add a more down to earth, unpretentious flavor to my quilts.  I like my scrap quilts to look like grandma stuck her hand in a bag and she used the first piece she pulled out.  Maybe it's a piece of kitchen curtain or maybe it was one of Papa's shirts.  Grandma used what she had and she "made it work", right?

Stripes keep my quilts from looking over the top "prissy".  I love, love, love feminine, but a pinch of stripe, homespun, and plaid seem to make it easier for the men in my life to cuddle up with flowers. Unless requested otherwise, when making a quilt for a couple, my quilt equation seems to be
75% girl + 25% dude = 100% everyone is happy.  She gets the pretty quilt she wanted and he's not embarrassed to be seen with it.

Did I mention I love shirtings?  They are my favorite.  Maybe someday I'll make an all shirtings quilt.  I love to mix civil war, 30's and novelties.  I'll throw anything in there if I like it.  It's like making a soup. You taste it and notice it needs a pinch more salt.

Pooh the Narcissist Cat saw me with the camera then ran to be in the photo.  He likes to model quilts.  He said he's too sexy for this quilt, but notice how he didn't get up to leave.  He stayed.  He must be the center of attention at all times and demands you tell him how pretty he is!

I wish I had more scripture fabric.  Sometimes it's nice to throw a piece of it in.

In the first mention of this quilt, I shared how I added some browns and creams to "butter and toast" the quilt up.  Here is an example in this block.  I didn't want it reading too primitive or bright, electric-white-4th-of -July.  I needed it to be ~ "Goldylocks and the Three Bears" ~ just right.
Goal accomplished.

I think it turned out exactly as I had envisioned it, although I didn't care for it for the longest time.  I forced myself to keep sewing anyway.  (...I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...).  In the end, the quilt and I made amends, forming a strong friendship.  I AM, however, glad it's gone.  And I will NOT be sewing another King for awhile.

The very proud Texans whom this quilt will bless and cover loved it and said it was perfectly "them".  It was as if the quilt was made for them in mind.  Well...YEA...it was.  :)

This is what Lisa said about it:
One f the many things I love about my quilt is the randomness yet clearly thought out pattern of it all.  The colors are clearly mine...tattered Texas flag in a dessert Texas sky.  I cannot believe how you nailed it.  You get us.  I've asked the quilter to keep it simple and cuddly.  We are practical people so it will have to stand up to real life.  I simply cannot wait.

Do you like to work with stripes?

Pooh says, "Howdy, y'all!"

who are really my friends.
I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”

A Texas flavored Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt

I childhood best friend has been promised a quilt for a very long time.  Her husband was diagnosed with cancer last year, so I thought I better hurry.  6 months later, after hurrying, *cough*, it was completed today.  And I found out today, he is cancer free right now....when he shouldn't be.  Thank you God.  So instead of this being a comforting quilt for Jack and Lisa, it's a celebration quilt.
Some of the blocks.  I LOVE shirtings.
She requested something mostly blue, looking a little Americana/Patriotic maybe, but NOT "heavy on the 4th of July". This is a quilt they want to use all year.  I went with mostly blues, Navy, Sapphire, Royals and some light blues.  The second color was brown and creams, and the third are my pops of Red.

Piecing the rows.  At this point, I'm really hating it and asking, "What have I done???"
With the added browns, it turned out looking a lot like a Texas type of quilt, which is exactly perfect.  I couldn't have planned it better, being as we're all from Kerrville, Texas in the Hill Country.  One of the prettiest places on earth. :)

Yep.  Guess what's in those vintage suitcases?  UFO's. *facepalm*
I heard the Disappearing 9 Patch was quick, easy and fun.  I went with it and enjoyed making this pattern.  Instead of cutting into fabric, I decided to use up what I had on hand.  I have a kagillion Nickle Squares from 10 years of swapping.  I made large 9 patches with my 5 inch squares.  It worked out very scrappy.

One thing annoying me was the pop of golden/yellow/brown.  But if I took them out, the quilt was reading "red, white and blue".  It was mostly a blue and white quilt without the brown.  I needed it to be a bit more earthy and rustic.  I decided to stick it out with the browns and it worked well in the end.  I'm glad I gave my eyes and mind time to adjust.  I observed it different times of day, in different light and it started to feel "Texan" to me...perfect for Jack.

...Rowing...
And of course, after I was completely done last night, I thought it was one row short of a perfect King size.  It looked awkward.  No perfectionist worth her weight in salt could tolerate that.  I went ahead and quickly made 7 more blocks to finish it off.  PERFECT.

I hoard my Texas fabric and put a tiny piece of it in EVERY quilt I make.
It's like my signature or my trademark. :)
I haven't really "loved" this quilt so much and thought it was ugly 24 hours ago.  Now that the top is complete, I think I like it.  It will probably be beautiful when it's quilted and bound.

I think I could "love" this pattern, if I wasn't in a hurry to complete something.  I can see this pattern being a lot of fun if you take the time to play with it.  I'll have to try it again using different placements and fabrics.

Dear Watson thoughtfully stayed up with me, while I made 7 more patches.
He likes to make sure the dogs don't touch my stuff.

I'll show you what it looks like on a bed tomorrow.  Stay tuned.
  • So have you made a Disappearing Nine Patch before?  What do you like about it?
  • Also, do you have a signature or trademark piece of "YOU", that you put in every quilt, like I do my little pieces of Texas?  If you don't yet, what you would put?
  • What symbol represents you? A butterfly?  A sock monkey?  A piece of Holly?

Binding Friendships = Binding Quilts

Friendships are what our dreams are made of.

We hold onto each other with its binding love.

We stand close to each other, hand in hand,

showing each other we understand.

Some friends may come and go,

but you are the truest friend I know.

Yes, I realize this little poem borders on cheesy.  D'oh!
I see so much metaphor and symbolism in quilting.  I love to sit in silence while I quilt, listening to the prose of each stitch I make with my hand, thinking and praying for the intended receiver.
Be quiet and listen to the work of your hands.
Blissful, peaceful blessings to you this week!

Prayer Leeks

Some thoughts from my life long best friend, Lisa.  Knowing her has been one of the great joys of my life.  I remember meeting her for the first time walking to school in the 6th grade.  I thought to myself, "This is the strangest person I've ever met and I think I want to be friends with her forever!!!!!"

She wasn't strange, she was just "unique".  She's different.  There is no one else like her in the history of planet earth.  She's in her own world and is pretty much one of the funniest people I've ever met.  She lights up a room with her joyful spirit.  She's a treasure to me.

BFF Lisa and her female offspring
She is a great source of edification and strength for me.  She's very articulate and always seems to say just what I need to hear.  I've begged her for years to pursue writing.  She has a gift.

This was a status update from the other day.  I asked her permission to share on my blog.  I pray it blesses you as much as it blessed me.

Happy Lord's Day.
Be a Blessing.

Leeks Leaking....

When my son was much younger, I planted some leeks outside our front door. He asked what they were. I explained that they were like an onion bulb that would grow under ground. As days went by, it always seemed the ground was pushing them up, even though I watered & patted them back down. Finally, in frustration, I asked in my son's hearing, "Why does it seem the earth is pushing these leeks back out?" Matter of factly he said, "Oh I pull them up everyday to measure their growth." That is how I sometimes do God. I give something, (or someone) over to Him in prayer, only to come back with my measuring reed to see how they have grown. Arrested development by an impetuous lack of faith or patience. Take it to God, leave it with God. A lot can go on at the root level that you can't judge from the looks of things. The eyes can't perceive the realm of the spirit. Don't believe your eyes, believe your God. 2 Timothy 1:12 "I know in whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him." Love that!

Pooh sends Get Well message to Mr. Toes

A very nice internet friend, Linda at A La Carte,
has a sweet "cat child" named Mr. Toes.
An evil, wicked, mean, nasty, hateful, barbaric, savage human (inhuman) shot
Mr. Toes with a pellet gun.
He isn't feeling well right now and is very, very sick.

Please go give Mr. Toes some love and lift them up in prayer.
Pray for Linda too, as I'm sure she's sad and worried.

Our pets are our children,
and surely God cares for our furry babies too.
He answers the fervent prayers of the righteous.

Pooh was so upset for Mr. Toes,
he put his head down and cried.

Be Kind.
Be the light in a very dark world.
Be blessed and Be a Blessing

Weekending

Worked so hard this week on merchandise for my antique booth and Etsy.
I'm exhausted.
Really, really, really worn out.
I wish I had something more interesting to share than this............

My best friends butt.

We found this on a beach in New Hampshire and died laughing.
Are we the only ones who think this sign is hysterical?
I made her pose for this pic.  I'm so mean!
A true friend would have never done this.

Well pretty people.......have a blessed weekend.  Be safe and warm.
Make memories.  xoxoxox

Secret Santa Soiree Swap

I was the first to sign up for the Secret Santa Soiree Swap at Coloradolady

Why not, I say......this could be fun.  Gifting is my Love Language, so I'm pretty good at it.  :)
Plus, I consider myself a "Hunter Gatherer" by trade.  The harder I shopped, the more fun the $20.00 budget became.  I found a TON of good stuff for $20.00.  I think my Secret Santa up in Yankee territory liked her box.

Next it was my turn.

I opened the package I received from my own Secret Santa after we returned home from our Christmas cruise.  I came home with a psychotic head cold.  The kind of cold that makes you crazy and you kinda foam at the mouth a little and scare people.  So I haven't meant to be neglectful in thanking my Secret Santa with beautiful handwriting from the snow belt, I think OH some where.  She's probably a Buckeye.  She sent the sweetest box full of Lovies for me, all with notes to treasure.

So thank you, to my Secret Santa!  Leisel opened the box with me and was just as excited to rip open the packages.  She ate one of her treats right away!!!  And Pooh.....he's very ungrateful and somewhat nasty at times (to everyone but me), but I gave his tail a good yank and he said he was sorry and that he is grateful for the purple ball after all.

I'll share with you our afternoon festivities and show exactly how things went down:

This is what my box looked like all wrapped up and pretty.  I over did it on the snow a little...I live in Florida.  A girl can dream, can't she?

I got lots of "paper" which is my favorite.  Anything papery!  Note cards.  Stationery.  Socks!!!  (I LOVE socks).  A Book.  A Magazine.  A pattern.  Oh...and cat fabric of course and some Gardenia smell good stuff that will go in the sewing room "Studio" as I collect vintage fabrics and it's starting to smell "vintage" in there.  I hate that smell.  I love my lovlies.

Leisel (Lee Lee the Cow Dog) sat with me and was pretty chill through the whole thing until she saw she got a present too.  Oh boy!

What the.....???  (Pooh was asleep so I rolled the ball to his nose.  He sniffed.  Didn't care).

He wouldn't play with it, so I put it on his back.  He screams like a girl who ran into a spider web, "GET IT OFF.  GET IT OFF".

Oh.  Wait.  Excuse me for a second.  I have an itch.  OK, all better.  (RUDE!!)

OK Mom.  Tell me what to do.  Do I look at it?  Or what?  Chase it?  I don't get it.

Ohhhhh, you want me to model?  Well I can do that.  Because I'm so pretty.  Work it.  I'm "Smizing".

This is my "Calvin Klein Underwear Make Like a Sphinx" pose.

This is how I vogue!  (At this point, he's just showing off).

Mmk, are we done now.  I'm bored.

Ignore it and maybe it will go away.

Nope.  Still there.

CAN I PLAY?  CAN I PLAY?  CAN I PLAY?

Wow, it rolls and it smells........interesting.

Mom, I told you I was done.  Back off.

HOLY CRAP A BOX!!!!!!!!!!!  YIPPEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Moooommmm......Leisel's touching my ball. HEY DOG, GET AWAY FROM MY BALL.

*********************************************************************************

Have no fear.  I tied a bunch of yarn around the ball and he played and is still playing, with his new purple ball.

God's in His heaven; all's right with the world.

More New Hampshire

"Men hang out their signs indicative of the respective trades:  shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers, a monster watch; and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show."

"On and on they flew, over the countryside parceled out in patches of green and brown, over roades and rivers winding through the landscapes like strips of matte and glossy ribbon."

~J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows~

Taking it all in, with my favorite friends.

Human beings are remarkable - at what we can learn to live with.  If we couldn't get strong form what we lose, and what we miss, and what we want and can't have, then we couldn't ever get strong enough, could we?

Life isn't long enough to do all you could accomplish. And what a privilege even to be alive. In spite of all the pollutions and horrors, how beautiful this world is. Supposing you only saw the stars once every year. Think what you would think. The wonder of it!”
 ~ Tasha Tudor ~

Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. ”

~Oscar Wilde~

"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful,
we must carry it with us, or we find it not."

And more to come. :)  Stay tuned!
